At the beginning of the summer we got behind the wheel of the new Kia Ceed, and we also knew that a new variant with body type Shooting Brake, which combines practicality and design, was on the way, and here it is. It is called Kia ProCeed 2019 and will be on sale in the first quarter of 2019.
Although it is officially presented at the Paris Salon, the Korean firm is showing it in Barcelona. It is a model that takes its name from the previous version of three doors, designed and developed in Europe, and that will be manufactured from November in Slovakia.
Available only in the sportiest versions of the range, GT Line and GT, according to the brand “takes the athletic spirit of the previous pro_ceed’d” and takes it to a shooting brake silhouette. It is a longer and shorter model than the five-door Ceed and the familiar Ceed Sportswagon, and in fact the first one only shares the bonnet and the front wings.
It measures 5 millimeters more than the Ceed Sportswagon, for a total of 4.61 meters, and is 43 millimeters lower (1.42 meters), also reducing the ground clearance by 5 millimeters (135 mm in this case). The battle is the same (2.65 meters), since it is based on the same K2 platform as the rest of the Ceed range. In addition, it inherits many features of the 2017 Kia Proceed Concept.
Although the grille is the typical “tiger nose” of the brand and the headlights have the “ice cube” design of the five doors, this ProCeed sports specific bumpers, although it is equally wide (1.8 meters). The biggest difference, obviously, is the roof line, which falls towards the rear, as well as the rear window, more inclined, or the rear pilots, for example.
The ProCeed 2019 will be available in ten body colors, with 17 or 18 inch aluminum wheels in the case of the GT Line variants, and 18-inch as standard in the case of the GT.
New generation interior
The cabin, as is logical, has the same design as the rest of the Ceed brothers, starring the 7-inch (8-inch) navigation touch-screen on the dashboard with navigation option and compatible with Apple Car Play and Android Auto. However, it has specific elements such as the roof in black (instead of the gray of the Ceed and Ceed Sportswagon), a flattened steering wheel -with cams in the automatic- or metal strips on the door sills, among other things.
There are also different front seats available, depending on the version. The GTs have sports seats upholstered in black leather with embroidered GT logos and red stitching, while the GT Line has seats with larger ears than conventional ones, and lined in black fabric and gray synthetic leather. Optionally there are leather and suede upholstery with gray stitching.
Standard includes Bluetooth connectivity, automatic lights or keyless access and start, for example, while optionally customers can equip eg a JBL Premium sound system, heated front and rear seats, windshield also heated, wireless charger for smartphone or seats front ventilated. Automatic variants also have a driving mode selector.
Kia also highlights the capacity of the boot of this ProCeed, 594 liters, 50% higher than the Ceed five-door but somewhat lower than the familiar or Sportswagon, which reaches 625 liters. In any case, it does offer the solutions of the latter, such as folding seats in 40:20:40 proportion, which also leave a flat bottom, or hooks and storage compartments. Optionally the gate can be of automatic opening.
Engines and chassis
All versions of the Kia ProCeed have a standard multi – link rear suspension, although the body is 5 millimeters closer to the ground than in his brothers and the set-up of the model is slightly different, so you have your own character on the road. In the case of the GT, the behavior and the traction capacity are even better, thanks to harder springs and less rigid stabilizers. All equip pair vector distribution through the brakes.
With regard to engines, Kia offers three for the GT Line: a 1.0-liter T-GDi of 120 hp and 172 Nm, a 1.4-liter T-GDi “Kappa” of 140 hp and 242 Nm (both petrol with filter particles), and finally, a 1.6-liter CRDi Smartstream (the cleanest diesel in the history of Kia, with SCR), with 136 hp and 320 Nm, available with six-speed manual gearbox or automatic double clutch and seven ratios.
PROCEED GT, meanwhile, equips a 1.6 liter T-GDi of 204 hp and 265 Nm, also available with a dual clutch transmission and seven speeds. At the moment, yes, the manufacturer has not offered data on benefits, since the approval process has not been completed.
Finally, the assistance and safety systems include automatic road lights, driver attention alert, and lane maintenance assistant with assistant against frontal collisions. In option you can add the lane tracking assistant (level 2 autonomy, functional up to 180 km / h), adaptive cruise control, dead angle alert, pedestrian detector, cross traffic alert, intelligent parking assistant, etc. …
