The problems that occur with windows are generally all linked to weather and their exposure to the elements. It also takes the weather to highlight when an issue may be occurring.  Here are some issues.

  1. Allowing in Drafts. It is a rather sad fact that the windows in the house let out the most amount of heat in the home. It makes it even worse when the windows are also letting in the cold via a draft or drafts. This can result in a very cold house. You can try and seal then up in the short term with sealant and caulk but if it persists then the time has probably come to replace the windows entirely.
  2. Getting lots of condensation. You suddenly find that your windows in the morning are obscured by misty wetness. This is condensation and it is where the cold air outside has hit the warm air inside and formed steam that then settles on the cold window as water. It means that the windows insulation seal has been compromised and while you maybe able to put some new sealant in again it might mean that the windows will need to be replaced.

  1. Rotting wood frames. If you have wood frames, they will need constant yearly care via paint and wood preserver. If they are rotted and starting to go so that drafts are coming in, then it might be time to replace them with new frames. If the conditions where you are a very inclement and harsh then something more hard wearing than wood might be better than PVC.
  2. Windows that are faulty in the first place should be looked at immediately or else all of the problems above will become a big problem.
