As another year draws to a close, many of us are considering new year’s resolutions and whether we can actually stick to them this time. Most resolutions are broken within a matter of weeks, days and for many, just hours! So, how can we set ourselves up for success this time?

  1. Keep it simple

Rome wasn’t built in a day, so don’t imagine you can completely overhaul your life by the end of January! You’ll end up feeling guilty, disappointed and disheartened. Set yourself up for success by focusing on one or two clear goals that are most important and achievable and you’ll feel much better about things.

It’s important that you choose something that will have the biggest impact on your overall happiness and health. Whilst hard, something like quitting smoking or drinking will provide the longest health benefits. Don’t smoke or drink? Choose to de-clutter your home and get more organised. Aiming far too high could well lead to disappointment. How have you been with resolutions in the past? Try to be realistic and set manageable goals in a series of stages if you think this is more achievable.

Looking at a mountain and thinking of getting to the top is daunting to say the least. Looking at a mountain and focusing on getting to checkpoint one is much easier to envisage. Think of a long-term goal and break it down into a timeline of smaller, more achievable goals. Look at the issue on a week-by-week basis and you’ll be far more likely to stick to your plans.

An open-ended goal could see you lacking in motivation. A timeframe is essential for keeping you motivated and being a yardstick for your success. Keep a diary or mark goals on a calendar and decide how and when you evaluate your progress.

How will you reward yourself when you hit a milestone moment? However, don’t let those treats be your downfall. Perhaps make them something unrelated to your resolution.
